Gadgets To Look Forward To At IFA 2014

It is that time of the year once again with new product launches in the consumer electronics world ranging from wearable smartwatches to gigantic LEDs.

Yes, we are talking about IFA 2014 which will be held in Berlin from 5th-10th September. As a plethora of leaks suggest expect some pretty amazing Android innovations at IFA with tech giants such as Samsung, Sony, LG and Motorola releasing their gadgets for hands-on display at IFA 2014. Let’s take a look at the various products which we might see at the tech show and why you should be excited about them:

Samsung

Whether you love them or hate them, but there’s just no stopping them as the giant is all said to roar again with 3 smartphones, a smartwatch, a virtual reality headset and a Smart TV. The Unpacked Event on September 3rd might especially focus on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 since the company is issuing invites to the event with some very strong hints of the products launch. The virtual reality headset, Samsung Gear VR hasn’t been making much rounds but just expect it to demo alongside the Note 4. The products that might matter from this event:

Samsung Galaxy Note 4:

Just like its predecessors, the Note 4 will take centre stage at Samsung’s IFA Unpacked Event. The next generation phablet is expected to deliver a serious punch to its fierce rival, the iPhone 6 which is expected to launch on September 9. With every successor to the Note series, Samsung has increased the screen size by 0.2 inches and expect the same this year. According to the rumormills the phone is expected to rock a QHD display of 5.7 or 5.9 inches, 4 GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 805 or an octa-core Exynos 5433 processor variant. Other rumors suggest a three-sided and a curved display which appear to be taken with a grain of salt.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 2:

Note 4 will be joined with another huge device, the mid-ranger Galaxy Mega 2. The successor is expected to incorporate almost the same screen size of Note 4 alongwith a Snapdragon 400 or 410 CPU and 2 GB of RAM.

Samsung Gear Solo:

This appears to be just a codename but this wearable is expected to be completely different from other smartwatches as it will have its own SIM card and will be capable of making calls without the help of a smartphone. The smartwatch will be powered by Samsung’s own Tizen operating system. The competition will shift to the wearable segment if Samsung manages to unveil it at IFA.

Sony

We don’t know what is going on with Sony because they have been continuously releasing new flagship after every six months. The Sony Xperia Z was launched in January 2013, the successor Z1 in September 2013, the Xperia Z2 in February 2014 and now it is rumored that Xperia Z3 will be unveiled at IFA 2014 alongwith the Z3 Tablet Compact and new QX lenses.

Sony Xperia Z3:

Sony has launched three flagships in just a matter of 18 months and we may witness the fourth one already. According to China’s TENAA certification, the Sony Xperia Z3 was spotted on the website. The spec sheet doesn’t impress us much with only an upgraded CPU, Snapdragon 801 clocked at 2.5 GHz (from 2.3 GHz in Xperia Z2). The rest of the internals alongwith the OmniBalance design are expected to be carried forward from its predecessor though expect it to be a bit lighter and thinner.

Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact:

The Xperia Z2 Tablet was introduced alongside the Z2 at MWC and the same trend will be continued at IFA 2014 with the Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact. The new tablet will be LTE-capable and seems to have got the nod from the Indonesian authorities. Not much is known about its specs but as the name suggests it will be smaller than the previous offerings.

LG

LG is looking to follow the same strategy as Samsung as they are all set to launch their modestly powered mid-range G3-looking smartphones alongwith LG G Watch R.

LG G Watch R will be available for hands-on at IFA 2014

LG G Watch R:

LG released the first complete round faced smartwatch a day back and the watch will be showcased this year’s IFA. The plastic OLED display looks stunning and the watch does have a premium and conventional feel just like any other watch. The smartwatch competes directly with Motorola’s Moto 360 and even took jabs at it of utilizing 100% of its display. The specifications of the wearable include Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 SoC with 1.2GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of built-in memory, 410mAh battery and the usual gyro, accelerometer, compass and barometer sensors.

LG G3 Stylus:

The LG G3 Stylus is another variant of the flagship phone G3. The phone will come with a stylus and some specs cut down from its elder brother featuring a 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 5.5-inch QHD display with 960 x 540 pixel resolution, 8 GB internal memory with expandable storage, 1 GB RAM, 13 MO rear-camera with 1.3 MP front shooter and 3,000mAh battery. The phone will make an appearance at IFA where the pricing and availability of the device will be detailed.

Motorola

Motorola has had some phenomenal success with all of its smartphones launched the previous year and is expected to once again steal the spotlight with their successors to be announced at this year's IFA.

Motorola cleared all the rumours with this IFA 2014 Invite

Moto X+1:

The Moto X provided Touchless Controls and Active Display with some excellent customization options being the icing on the cake. The Moto X+1 or X2 might provide the same functions but with some heavily beefed up hardware. The Moto X+1 is all set to feature 5.2 inch Full HD display, 2.45 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip, 2GB of RAM Adreno 330 GPU, a 12 MP rear shooter and a 2 MP front facing camera. The smartphone will be a huge upgrade over the Moto X which came with dated specs during that time.

Moto G2:

The Moto G helped Motorola get in the smartphone race once again so it makes sense to launch a successor to it with some upgraded specs to compete with some new competitors in various markets such as Xiaomi and OnePlus who are dishing out their smartphones at a very affordable price with some fairly good specs. The Moto G2 might turn the tide as it is all set to feature a 5 inch display, 8 MP primary camera and expandable storage. The other specs such as the CPU and RAM may remain the same. The Moto G2 will also bring the speakers to the front, just like Moto E.

Moto 360:

The Moto 360 debuted at Google I/O 2014 but was not available for sale until the fall. But now since IFA is here, it seems evident that the watch may go on sale anytime soon. The Moto 360 is much more stylish than its rivals the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live but the upcoming LG G Watch R may give it a run for its money. The Moto 360 features a 1.5 inch backlit LCD protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The pricing and availability for the smartwatch will be announced at Motorola’s September 4 launch event.

ASUS

Asus Smartwatch to be launched at IFA 2014

Asus Smartwatch:

Asus is not far behind in the smartwatch race as they prepare to unveil their round edged smartwatch. The smartwatch seems to be a hybrid of round and square-faced smartwatch. Not much is known about the wearable at the moment but the teasers released by Asus does excite us for September 3rd.
